On September 1, 1923, Tokyo and surrounding areas were devastated by a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake, with a death toll of over 100,000 people[1] from the disaster, including a large number of Koreans and socialists murdered by mobs.
In Japan, this earthquake was named the “Kanto Daishinsai(関東大震災).” According to the Earthquake Research Committee, the probability of an earthquake of this magnitude occurring in the southern Kanto region is estimated to be around 70% within 30 years.
On this day, various drills and events are held across the country to raise awareness of disaster prevention and confirm disaster preparedness.
